The history of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

The bell tower of the Duomo Cathedral, better known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, attracts a huge number of curious people due to its unique "fall", which has been going on for more than eight hundred years. Its height is 56 meters, or 8 floors, or 294 steps. At the moment, the slope is 3° 54, about 4 meters at the base and 5 m 30 cm at the top. The place where the tower is located is called the "Square of Miracles", and in addition to the bell tower, you can see the Cathedral, cemetery and baptistery here.

Construction began in 1173, and was completed only in 1360. It was conducted by various architects for almost 200 years. This long-term construction is due to the fact that during the work, something went wrong (as it often happens), and the tower deviated from the original design in the literal sense. The reason for this could be soft muddy soil, groundwater, or design errors. The architects have strengthened the foundation several times, and work in this direction continues to this day. The change in the trajectory of the Leaning Tower of Pisa has been slowed down, but despite this, it continues to tilt by 1 mm per year.

Before entering the tower, you need not only to take care of tickets in advance, since no more than 40 people can be in it at the same time, but also to assess your ability to climb the cramped steps of a narrow spiral staircase to the eighth floor. There is a rope stretched around the perimeter of the upper observation deck instead of a railing, so those who are afraid of heights should not take risks.

The tower not only "receives" numerous tourists, but also performs its "direct" duties – it is an active bell tower. It has seven bells, each of which sounds like one of the musical notes. Their chime can be heard before the beginning of the divine service and at noon.

The best time to travel to Pisa is after lunch. In this case, there will be a chance to take a couple of photos without making your way through the crowd of tourists who compete for the most unusual shot. What is the best way to plan a day and what to see in Pisa? If you go from the Square of Miracles towards Pisa Central Station, you can take a wonderful walk and see the rest of the sights. It is important to remember that there are two stations in the city: one Pisa S.Rossore is located next to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the main Pisa Centrale is on the other bank of the Arno River.

What else to see in Pisa?

- the Gothic Church of the Thorn (Santa Maria dela Spina), named because it houses a Christian relic, the thorn from the crown of thorns of Jesus Christ,
- two beautiful buildings on Cavalieri Square: Palazzo Carovana, which means "Palace of the Knights" and Palazzo Orologio, respectively, "Palace of the Hours",
- Churches of Santo Stefano in Piazza Cavalieri and San Paolo a Ripa on the banks of the Arno

Tip: if you do the opposite and first see the city on the way from the central station towards the Square of Miracles, then the experience of visiting Pisa will be brighter!
